We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use.

More than 8 million tons of plastic gets dumped into our oceans every year.

♦ Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute.

♦ A plastic bag has an average “working life” of 15 minutes.

♦ Over the last ten years, we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century.

♦ In 2014, the U.S. sold over 100 billion plastic beverage bottles, the Container Recycling Institute estimated; 57 percent of them were for water.

That is a large increase from 1996 when the U.S. sold an estimated 3.8 billion plastic water containers.

♦ Even tiny beads in toothpaste, facial scrubs, and other toiletries can be found in waters all over the world and contribute to the problem of plastic pollution that cannot be easily seen.

Where Does This Plastic Pollution Originate?

So the question you might be wondering is, where do all these plastic bags and other items come from?

Of the material in the collection of garbage in the Pacific Ocean, 80 percent comes from the land (coastal deposits of plastic from North America take six years to reach the patch), and 20 percent comes from oil rigs, boaters, and cargo ships – most of this is fishing nets.

Plastic waste materials don’t usually just drift about aimlessly in the open ocean.

Sometimes they can, but mostly all the waste is routed by ocean currents to “collection zones.”

The largest of which is called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

So, after briefly touching on just SOME of the facts, let’s look at how we can reduce one of the main pollutants responsible for the damage – plastic bags.

1. Plastic bags pollute our land and water…

Look around and you’ll see they are everywhere. Flying around, tangled in trees and fence, floating around in ponds, and lying on the ground in parks.

They’re so lightweight that it’s super easy to be picked up by the wind and to travel distances.

The majority of plastic bags are made of polyethylene, a substance that is derived from crude oil refining and natural gas processing.

Oil and natural gas are non-renewable fossil fuel-based resources and through their extraction and production, they emit greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change.

3. Plastic bags never break down…

Petroleum-based plastic bags are composed of very resistant synthetic polymers that may take up to 1,000 years or never until they completely degrade in natural environments.

What does occur in most instances is that, when out in the environment, the plastic breaks up into tiny microscopic pieces that get deposited in soil (where we grow food) or contaminate waterways.

These invisible little fragments get into everything. Soil, water, air, animals, and plants we consume – meaning plastic is inside us too.

In fact, toxic chemicals that leach out of plastic, are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us.

Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption, and other ailments.

4. Plastic bags are harmful to wildlife and marine life…

According to a study carried out in 2013, up to 35 percent of turtle deaths were caused by plastic ingestion, and the probability that sea turtles will consume even more plastic increases every year.

Sea turtles and sea life aren’t the only ones affected. It’s estimated that approximately one million sea birds also die from plastic yearly.

100,000 turtles and marine mammals, such as dolphins, whales and seals, are killed by plastic marine litter every year around the world.

5. Plastic bags are harmful to human health…

Micro plastics were found in soft drinks like Coca Cola, in tap water, in seafood…

It has contaminated our food chain, so it should not surprise us that it can be tracked in our body.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what’s going on here.

The marine animals that are eventually caught as seafood and consumed by people contain micro-plastics.

Chemicals in plastic, such as BPA, can be absorbed by the human body when we eat these fish.

Some can trigger various health effects and even alter hormones.

Scientists suspect that it may add stress to the liver by introducing more pathogens into the body.

High exposure can increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes, according to a study, while tests on animals have shown the potential for damage to developing brain and reproductive systems.

Additionally, plastics in our digestive tract may affect the absorption of some important trace elements (like iron) which we need for maintaining proper health.

When buried in landfills, plastics can release chemicals that find their way into groundwater.

6. Plastic bags are not easy to recycle…

As plastic bags tend to get caught in recycling machinery, most recycling facilities do not have the capacity to recycle plastic bags and therefore do not accept them.

In fact, plastic bags are considered by many recycling facilities the number one contaminant and their removal from the recycling stream costs municipalities close to $1 million a year.

7. Plastic bags are costly to pay for and to clean up after…

Nothing is actually free in this world.

There is a cost at some point in the consumption process.

Retailers incorporate the costs of their bags into the pricing of other items in the store.

The cost of cleanup per bag (meaning waste collection and processing) is about 17 cents.

On average, taxpayers end up spending about $88 per year on plastic bag waste alone.

8. There are better reusable alternatives available…

The very best alternative is a reusable bag, plain and simple.

Reusable shopping bags are very durable and can be reused many times over the course of their useful life.

This means that you are not consuming more resources every time you need to carry your groceries home.

Instead, you are actually reusing a product, and that means that you are utilizing earth’s resources smartly, while at the same time reducing waste.

So many times we check out at convenience stores, for example, with ONE or TWO small items in it.

That’s just a simple example of refusing when we do not absolutely NEED!

Often times, store employees are instructed to separate different types of products in different bags or use a bag for only one or two specific items, wasting the rest of the space.

Hand-carry the items out of the store if you can.

The most challenging aspect of this is remembering to take them into the store and creating the habit.

A simple way to overcome this is to always keep your bags in your car.

This image might be comical to some, but plastic pollution is no laughing matter.

Back in the 1960’s, plastic items like grocery bags were first becoming very popular in stores across the country.

It was later on in this decade that the first plastic debris in the ocean were observed.

Over the years, the amount of single-use plastics (like straws, bags and cups) being used have been growing as society seeks more and more convenience.

Being sustainable is more work, but it’s a pay now or pay later type of deal.

Most of society, unfortunately, would rather pay later. But that has lead to the environmental crisis we are facing today.

These plastics don’t just disappear. In fact, most plastics will take 500+ years to decompose.

The first plastic items that were ever made, still exist today.

As of 2015, only 20% of plastic is recycled. An improvement from the 9% recycled between the 1950’s and 2015.

About another 25 percent is incinerated, leaving over half of all plastics entering our ecosystem.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest of the five offshore plastic accumulation zones in the world’s oceans. It is located halfway between Hawaii and California and contains a large percentage of all the plastic in the ocean.

The mass of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) was estimated to be approximately 80,000 tonnes, which is 4-16 times more than previous calculations. This weight is also equivalent to that of 500 Jumbo Jets.

The vast majority of plastics retrieved were made of rigid or hard polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), or derelict fishing gear (nets and ropes particularly). Ranging in size from small fragments to larger objects and meter-sized fishing nets.

Not only does plastic pollution in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch pose risks for the safety and health of marine animals, but there are health and economic implications for humans as well.

Plastic in the ocean has increasingly become a ubiquitous substance.

Due to its size and color, animals confuse the plastic for food, causing malnutrition; it poses entanglement risks and threatens their overall behavior, health and existence.

Once plastic enters the marine food web, there is a possibility that it will contaminate the human food chain as well.

Efforts to clean and eradicate ocean plastic have also caused significant financial burdens.

Through a process called bio-accumulation, chemicals in plastics will enter the body of the animal feeding on the plastic.

As the feeder becomes prey, the chemicals will pass to the predator – making their way up the food web that includes humans.

These chemicals that affected the plastic feeders could then be present within the human as well.

If you are a politically active individual, you can surely push your local congress to make tighter laws concerning single-use plastics.

Dozens of cities have already established bans or restrictions on the use of plastic straws in restaurants, and legislators in at least two states, California and Hawaii, have introduced proposals that would restrict their use.

For the rest of us who aren’t into politics but would like to reduce our plastic usage, here are 18 tips to help you out:

  1. Stop using plastic straws, even in restaurants. If a straw is a must, purchase a reusable stainless steel straw or reusable glass straw.
  2. Use a reusable produce bag. A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag and be sure to wash them often!
  3. Give up gum. Gum is made of a synthetic rubber, aka plastic.
  4. Buy boxes instead of bottles. Often, products like laundry detergent come in cardboard which is more easily recycled than plastic.
  5. Purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins and fill a reusable bag or airtight glass jars. You save money and unnecessary packaging.
  6. Reuse containers for storing leftovers or shopping in bulk.
  7. Use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, even when ordering from a to-go shop.
  8. Bring your own container for take-out or your restaurant doggy-bag since many restaurants use styrofoam.
  9. Use matches instead of disposable plastic lighters or invest in a refillable metal lighter.
  10. Avoid buying frozen foods because their packaging is mostly plastic. Even those that appear to be cardboard are coated in a thin layer of plastic. Plus you’ll be eating fewer processed foods!
  11. Don’t use plasticware at home and be sure to request restaurants do not pack them in your take-out box.
  12. Ask your local grocer to take your plastic containers (for berries, tomatoes, etc.) back. If you shop at a farmers market they can refill it for you.
  13. The EPA estimates that 7.6 billion pounds of disposable diapers are discarded in the US each year. Use cloth diapers to reduce your baby’s carbon footprint and save money.
  14. Make fresh squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic bottles. It’s healthier and better for the environment.
  15. Make your own cleaning products that will be less toxic and eliminate the need for multiple plastic bottles of cleaner.
  16. Pack your lunch in reusable containers and bags. Also, opt for fresh fruits and veggies and bulk items instead of products that come in single serving cups.
  17. Use a razor with replaceable blades instead of a disposable razor.
  18. Switch to using a bamboo toothbrush instead of a plastic handle one.
